In the bustling environment of a restaurant, the importance of wearing the correct shoes cannot be overstated. Restaurant employees face various hazards, from slippery floors to sharp objects, making appropriate footwear essential for their safety and well-being. Slip-resistant shoes are essential to prevent slips and falls, especially in busy kitchens or dining areas where spills are common. Additionally, shoes with reinforced toes and sturdy soles offer protection from dropped utensils, hot liquids, and other workplace hazards. Beyond immediate safety concerns, wearing the right shoes also promotes long-term foot health. Shoes that provide adequate support and cushioning can help prevent foot fatigue, arch strain, and other common ailments associated with prolonged standing and walking. If you are employed in a restaurant environment and are seeking information about the importance of adequate foot protection, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Associates of Victoria. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.

Foot and ankle injuries are common among dancers, posing significant challenges to their performance and well-being. Achilles tendonitis is the result of repetitive strain on the Achilles tendon and can lead to inflammation and tightness, affecting movement and stability. Ankle sprains, resulting from overstretching or tearing of ligaments, are among the most common dance injuries, causing pain, swelling, and reduced mobility. Stress fractures are hairline cracks in bones of the feet brought about by repetitive impact or overuse. By incorporating proper warm-up and cool-down routines, maintaining correct technique, and integrating strength and flexibility exercises into training, a dancer can help reduce the likelihood of injury. Additionally, wearing supportive footwear and listening to the body's signals can further safeguard against potential harm. When faced with such dance injuries, seeking assistance from a podiatrist is essential. These foot doctors can diagnose the root cause of the injury and recommend the appropriate treatment plan to aid in recovery. If you are a dancer, it is suggested that you include a podiatrist as part of your medical team.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Associates of Victoria. Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Buschke-Ollendorff Syndrome

Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the presence of skin abnormalities, typically in the form of firm, non-tender, rubbery bumps called connective tissue nevi, and bone abnormalities, such as osteopoikilosis. These can occur on the feet. It is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, meaning one copy of the altered gene in each cell is sufficient to cause the disorder. While the skin lesions are usually asymptomatic, they can cause cosmetic concerns. Osteopoikilosis often goes unnoticed and does not typically cause symptoms. Diagnosis is usually made based on clinical examination and imaging studies, such as X-rays. Management of Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome involves monitoring for any potential complications and addressing cosmetic concerns. Podiatrists can help by providing supportive care and addressing any foot-related issues that may arise, such as discomfort or deformities associated with osteopoikilosis. If you develop skin abnormalities affecting the feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and care.

Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Podiatry Associates of Victoria. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Rare Foot Conditions

The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist.  Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.

There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:

  • Freiberg’s disease
  • Kohler’s disease
  • Maffucci syndrome

Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.

Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.

Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.

A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.

Causes and Symptoms of Corns

Corns, also known as helomas, are common foot problems characterized by thickened areas of skin that develop in response to friction or pressure. Understanding the causes and symptoms of a corn is essential for effective management and prevention. These small, round lesions typically form on the toes or feet, often in areas where bones protrude or where shoes rub against the skin. The primary cause of corns is repetitive friction or pressure, which leads to the thickening of the skin as a protective response. Wearing ill-fitting shoes, high heels, and activities that involve prolonged standing or walking can exacerbate the formation of corns. Symptoms of corns may include pain or tenderness at the site, hardened or raised bumps, and swelling or redness. While corns are generally harmless, they can be uncomfortable and may interfere with daily activities. If you have developed a corn, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can offer you effective treatment methods for safe removal.

Corns can make walking very painful and should be treated immediately. If you have questions regarding your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists of Podiatry Associates of Victoria. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Corns: What Are They? And How Do You Get Rid of Them?
Corns are thickened areas on the skin that can become painful. They are caused by excessive pressure and friction on the skin. Corns press into the deeper layers of the skin and are usually round in shape.

Ways to Prevent Corns
There are many ways to get rid of painful corns such as:

  • Wearing properly fitting shoes that have been measured by a professional
  • Wearing shoes that are not sharply pointed or have high heels
  • Wearing only shoes that offer support

Treating Corns

Although most corns slowly disappear when the friction or pressure stops, this isn’t always the case. Consult with your podiatrist to determine the best treatment option for your case of corns.
